Second Conditional

SECOND CONDITIONAL

The Second Conditional is used to talk about 'impossible' situations.

Second Conditional Structure…

[ If   +   J   +   Simple past ] , [  J  +  Modal  +   Base verb ]

Modal [Could, might, would]

Examples:

If I had more money, I would buy a house.

If he had her number, he could  call her.

Negative… would not, could not, might not

                … had not, did not

NOTE: We use “were” for all subjects (I, You, He, She, It, We)

Examples:

If she were older, he would enter to the party

If I were rich, I would not work

The Second Conditional is also used to talk about 'unlikely' situations.

-If you were in my position, you'd understand.

-If I was the President, I'd reduce cost

More examples of Second Conditional…

I would sleep more if I had time

I would go to the party, if I didn't have to homework.

If I were the teacher, I would make class funny

If I were an animal, I would be a dog

If I were rich, I would buy a big house

If he did not live by the river, he could not go fishing
